GWO Basic Safety Training (BST) Onshore is the basic safety training offered by the Global Wind Organisation (GWO), designed for individuals working in the onshore wind energy industry (on land-based wind turbines). Unlike the Offshore version (which has 5 modules including Sea Survival), the Onshore version consists of exactly 4 modules: MH, FA, FAW, and WAH.
The 4 Modules and What They Mean:
- MH – Manual Handling Manual handling: Teaches correct techniques for lifting, carrying, and handling loads to prevent injuries (back pain, sprains, etc.). Includes ergonomic risk assessment and practical exercises.
-
FA – First Aid First aid: Prepares participants to recognize and manage medical emergencies (CPR resuscitation, bleeding, shock, etc.) in a wind turbine environment until professional help arrives.
-
FAW – Fire Awareness Fire awareness: Covers fire prevention, fire risk assessment, use of extinguishers, and evacuation procedures in case of fire inside a turbine.
-
WAH – Working at Heights Working at heights: The most comprehensive module – proper use of personal protective equipment (harnesses, lanyards, helmets), safe climbing techniques, basic rescue from height, and fall prevention.
General Information
- Course Duration: Usually 4-5 days (sometimes blended with e-learning for theory + practical sessions).
- Certificate Validity: 24 months (2 years). A refresher (BSTR Onshore) is required before expiry.
- Prerequisites: WINDA ID (free registration on winda.globalwindsafety.org), minimum age 18, good health.
- Why is it mandatory? It is the minimum safety standard for access to onshore wind farm sites. Without it, you cannot enter a turbine.
