The GWO Slinger Signaller course (abbreviated as SLS) is a certified training module from the Global Wind Organisation (GWO), the international body that sets safety standards for the wind energy industry.
This course is designed for individuals working in the wind turbine sector (onshore or offshore) who are involved in simple lifting operations with cranes, where they need to attach loads (slinging), inspect equipment, and direct the crane operator through signals (signalling).
Main Objective
The course prepares you to perform slinging and signalling techniques safely and efficiently during simple lifts based on a lifting plan that addresses known risks. The focus is on safety, risk reduction, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Course Duration
Typically 2 days (sometimes blended formats with 1 day practical + e-learning).
Certificate Validity
Unlimited (no expiry), though it’s recommended to stay active in the field and attend refreshers if required by your employer.
Prerequisites
- A WINDA ID (free registration on the GWO site: winda.globalwindsafety.org).
- Minimum age: 18 years.
- Good health (the course is physically demanding; usually a self-declaration medical form is required).
- No mandatory prior GWO courses, but Basic Safety Training (BST) is recommended, especially the Manual Handling module.
Course Content (Main Topics)
- General safety and risks in lifting operations.
- Legislation and roles/responsibilities in the lifting team.
- Types of lifting equipment (slings, shackles, hooks, lifting bags, etc.).
- Pre- and post-use inspection of accessories.
- Lifting plans, risk assessment.
- Techniques for attaching/detaching loads.
- Hand and radio signals for directing the crane (including blind lifts or with multiple signallers).
- Centre of gravity, lifting angles, manual handling.
- Intensive practical exercises: lift simulations, toolbox talks.
At the end, there is a theoretical assessment (written test) and practical evaluation.
